Fortifying our Community for 2026

“This year, I invite you to fiercely prioritize your inner world—your health, resilience, and nervous system. When we fortify ourselves, we fortify community.”

 

This invitation in Dr. Alexandra Cope’s recent email struck a chord for me. It’s one that continues to resonate as I reflect on what it means to strengthen our own inner world in a way that builds up our surrounding community.

 

First and foremost, I think of boundaries

 

Yeah, we say this all the time. But what does the term really mean? To me, I think of two types of boundaries that are absolutely worth protecting:

 

Of course we need to keep the boundary of our time intact.

 

We need to know how much margin time we need in order to stay connected with ourselves. We need to be able to sense when we are giving too much time away to others that we begin to lose touch and not feel present in our own body. When do you need to schedule a rest day, a date with yourself, or a Gratitude walk?

A body that is in constant overdrive cannot heal.

 

And we need to be mindful of protecting our emotional boundaries

 

It’s not selfish to not pick up that phone call or delay responding to that text when you know that you need space. Sometimes this can even mean gently letting go of that friendship is a little too one-sided a bit too often. Is someone in your life taking way more than they give? Yes, there will be seasons when a friend needs us to stand in the gap, but we’re talking about the long-term narrative here.

A body that constantly pours out without being refilled cannot heal.

 

Another step towards a fortified inner world is vagal nerve coherence.

 

Did you know that your vagal nerve stretches all the way from your brain to your abdomen? This nerve wires our bodies’ autonomic responses to stress. Did you know that you can improve your vagal tone, and therefore increase your capacity to manage stress? You can eventually stay grounded in situations that previously triggered you.

Dr. Cope taught me that a body that is stuck in trauma cannot heal.

 

Dr. Cope explains, “This is where Somatic (pertaining to the body) Experiencing thrives as a therapy. Somatic Experiencing (SE) focuses on the mind-body connection in order to address both mental and physical concerns. The focus of SE is to help you complete processing experiences, notice the mind-body connection, and cultivate awareness until you have enough capacity to work through distressing situations.”

 

Finally, intentional identity work reinforces your inner world like nothing else does. 

 

If you don’t know who you are, how do you know that you are worth protecting? We need to ask, “Where am I right now?”. This changes in each season of life. For example, Menopause represents a major psycho-spiritual transition. This can be a time for re-framing your life story during a stage that brings the opportunity for new growth! 

 

This is the time to ask, “Where am I headed?”. Identity works helps us refine our values, purify our relationships, and deepen our faith as we look to the future. Menopause can be the beginning of the best years of a woman’s life as the new freedoms of this life-stage pave the way for a wiser, stronger woman to live out her calling.

Without identity work, we don’t know what to focus on in our healing journey.

 

So as we honor each boundary, increase our capacity, and sharpen our identity, we become a stronger version of ourselves. And, as Dr. Cope writes, when we each seek to “prioritize our inner world”, we will see our health, our nervous system, and and our resilience all change for the better.

 

And because the sum is always greater than its parts, the resulting combination is more valuable and more powerful than anything we have to contribute on our own. We create a fortified, inspirational community made up of individual hearts who each answered the call to prioritize their inner world…
